Fantasy Golf: Sony Open in Hawaii

Previous Week Reflection: Finished 78th% overall, which is not good but not bad either. Els and Appleby's history didn't help me, but Poulter did come through. The popular C picks didn't score more than 30pts either, but looking at who did score 30+ they didn't have past stats to back up my confidence.

Here are my picks for this week:
A: Furyk (5 top 10s at course, good driving accuracy), Byrd (going with the hot hand and Els isn't giving me confidence based on last week)
B: Stricker (5 top 10s at course, 3rd last year, good driving accuracy), Rose (12th last year and 12th last tournament, good driving accuracy), Clark (Avg 19 rank over past 2 course appearances, and 3 top 20s in last 4 weeks, good driving accuracy), Allenby (2nd last year and 3 Top 10s at course)
C: Palmer (3 top 20s over past 4 tournaments, 1st last year), Howell (5 top 10s at course, 5th last year, 3 top 20s in past 8 weeks)

Fantasy Golf: Hyundai Tournament of Champions

To give you background. I've been playing Y! Fantasy Golf for about three years . My percentile ranking last year was 99%, 2009 - 97%, 2008-96%. Basically every week I put together an spreadsheet to analyze what golfers I think will do the best at a given tournament, and then make selections for Y! Fantasy Golf. Whats in the spreadsheet is below:
  • Average finish based on past 3 tournaments at the same course (do they play well at the course?)
  • Past year result at the same course
  • Average finish over 4 weeks and 8 weeks from data of tournament (are they playing well up to the tournament?)
  • World Golf Ranking
  • Avg rank of skills that are needed at a specific course (read blogs from writers on skills needed for the course (e.g. GIR or Sand Saves Rk)
  • Average Y! fantasy points over Past 4 and 8 weeks
  • GolfObserver.com Performance Chart
So thats the background, now I'll give you my top 2 for the Y! A/C group and 4 for B. I'm lacking complete data on past 4 and 8 weeks as PGA just had its fall break and not everyone played so I don't expect to do well this week plus there are a lot of new comers to the tournament with no history.

A: Ernie Els and Jim Furyk (both have 6+ top 10s at this tournament)
Replacement: Ogilvy but he has an injury, Graeme McDowell, Matt Kuchar
B: Steve Stricker, Stuart Appleby (both have 2+ top 10s  at this tournament)
B(bench): Tim Clark, Ian Poulter (going based on best available WGR and the fact neither is doing poorly since I last recall)
Replacement: C. Villegas, J. Rose, H. Mahan
C: Adam Scott (3+ top 10s and skill set), Zach Johnson (he's ranked well in all my metrics)
Replacement: A. Kim or F. Molinari
